Learn More About Airsoft Guns

February 8, 2010

In the United States alone, people have debated over the safety of our children on the use of Airsoft guns. What is Airsoft? Airsoft is actually a very popular game nowadays in which players are divided into teams and the ultimate goal is to bring the other teams down with compressed air guns which fire non-metallic pellets. These Airsoft guns can be powered in one of these three ways: electrically powered gearbox, manual spring-load, or gas.

There has been no known minimum age requirement in the United States to play Airsoft. Now you may wonder why. Since these kinds of guns are not really considered as dangerous firearms, the U.S law thus considered Airsoft to be legal for users of all ages. But when you come to think of it, not many parents would just allow their children to play with these realistic-looking air guns. Though not really considered as dangerous unlike the real firearms, Airsoft guns can still harm or create serious injuries especially if not properly handled.

States have different individual laws, so just remember to check your own state’s laws first before letting your children play Airsoft guns. In Minnesota, for example, children under 14 are not allowed to use Airsoft guns unless they are being supervised by adults. Significantly, in Minnesota, any child under 18 are not also allowed to purchase these guns without getting their parents’ permission first.

However, in California, children will not be permitted to handle any Airsoft guns unless they can get a parents’ permission. And if you happen to have a child who really wants to own an Airsoft gun, you certainly would need the following reminder.

Airsoft guns look very realistic and are usually detailed, in fact, there has been countless times wherein they have been mistaken for the real thing (even by law enforcement teams). So if you do decide to let your kid handle an Airsoft gun, make sure you don’t let them in public. It’s in fact possible that police officers may think that your kid is handling the real thing and may cause a shoot out. It’s a good thing in other states that Airsoft guns have bright orange tips so as to differentiate them from real firearms.

It’s always important to be cautious. In Longwood, Florida, 2006, a student brought an Airsoft gun to school wherein one sheriff’s deputy really thought that his Airsoft gun was the real thing. When the student started to threaten the other students, the deputy shot the student which led to his unfortunate death.
